Thais refer to ladyboys as kathoeys, and they have been around for a very long time. They were viewed as mystical beings having both masculine and female characteristics in early Thai legend. The term "ladyboy" is now increasingly frequently used to refer to transgender people or guys who behave like women. Ladyboys are becoming more widely accepted in Thai society, especially in the entertainment sector, yet they are still subject to prejudice and social stigma. The Thai government has, however, made an effort in recent years to promote acceptance and tolerance of the LGBTQ+ population.
